Week 3 of parenthood

Well, lots has happened in the last 3 weeks and already my time with Nye seems to be going too quickly.  He'll be a month old next week and that is a bit terrifying.

I am amazed at how quickly I feel I have got used to having him around, I have found lots of different ways to occupy him and learnt to mould myself around his routines.  Of course there is no set path, sometimes he settles easily after a good feed, giving me time to run round like a crazy woman trying to remember all the things I need to do before he stirs.  And with every sleep you have no idea how long it will last! (As luck would have it he just started whimpering from his bouncer chair, however a quick stroke of his face seems to have cured his problems and he's not silently sleeping again. Oh wait no, he's just started squeaking again.)

The main thing I haven't had time for has been making and writing his thank you cards, for the last week I've been saying to myself that they must be done.  Yesterday I really thought I had it sorted but unfortunately not as although he slept for 4 hours in the morning he didn't settle for a prolonged period until 7pm whilst we were making Tea.

I am pleased to say there isn't a lot we didn't have once he arrived, in fact we have an awful lot of things we cant even use yet.  However there have been a few godsend items that really help me get through the day.

Firstly an amazing vibrating bouncer chair given to us by friends.  I do have to prop him up in it with a blanket but if he's seeming sleepy but not yet screaming he is either lulled into a deep sleep or sits there happily looking around.  This isnt our exact one but ours is from Mammas and Pappas and exactly like this but different colours
.

And secondly this Early Learning Centre Blossom Farm Clover Cow Sit Me Up Cosy.
This is what I tend to use in the mornings whilst I run down stairs and make breakfast.

And my final purchase which I have been so pleased with has been the Nappy Bag I got for Christmas from Neil.  I have to admit that I did pick it myself but it was a bit of an odd choice as it isnt actually a 'Nappy Bag' but to be honest after visiting the Nappy Bag section of John Lewis I think mine is a much more practical bag than the ones that are supposedly 'fit for purpose'

Ta Da - It's a fossil Key Per Messenger Bag and they come in an enormous range of colours and patterns.  They have a magnetic latch, fit perfectly over a buggy handle with a really heavy duty strap, wipeable outside with a perfect number of pockets for mittens, hats, cotton wool, etc. etc. etc.  They even fit an A4 folder so I can carry all his notes around with enough room for my keys, phone, oystercard and wallet. = PERFECT!

The start of the journey

So, it's official I am a parent to a newborn.

Today is my first day 'going solo' as Neil has had to return to work. So far I've successfully managed to change nappies, get dressed, feed our little one and myself and even take a trip to the post office!  Yesterday I wondered if I would have enough time or energy to even get out of bed but here I am surviving for another day in what has so far been a peaceful and relaxed day.

I think I have been a bit spoilt for the last week as we were incredibly fortunate that due to my extended stay in Hospital Neil's school extended his leave and really I don't know what I would have done without him these last few days.  He's allowed me to vegetate on the sofa and sleep whilst my body tries to slowly get back to normal. All the time I'm watching and reading and listening to single parents or teenage mums and I'm thinking I cannot imagine what it would be like to not have such a doting husband.  Needless to say I've gradually found my feet and sitting here now with my son deep in sleep to my left has me feeling pretty empowered.  Dare I say it Neil was right yesterday telling me how much I'd enjoy it once I got used to it, and I have.

Talking about the Labour and getting to grips with looking after a baby seems so personal, as if I am opening myself up to so many comments, but at the same time, it has been reading other peoples blogs and forum posts on the same things that have kept me sane.  And in that light I am hoping that maybe writing about it will let me move on and may be useful to one person who is feeling low.

I think it all started with the pregnancy, I wanted to be perfect.  I never ate anything I shouldn't, I was constantly cautious, worrying about starting as I meant to go on, de-cluttering my life and making way for a precious new arrival.  This included reading up on natural births and refusing to even consider that I would need any intervention during labour.  Neil used to try and lightly coax me into considering other options but he could have said it a million times and it wouldn't have made a blind bit of difference. I tried to mentally prepare myself for the pain that was to come and to learn to be a more patient person.  I was dreaming of a water birth at Lewisham Birthing Centre, however before I even had the chance to set the wheels in motion, life threw a curve ball my way, my waters broke on the 11th January (my due date was on the 25th January) and 48 hours later with two trips for monitoring at Kings Maternal Assessment Unit there were no contractions.

I did everything I could to bring the contractions on, long long walks, hours bouncing on my birthing ball, the hottest Thai food available, raw pineapple, raspberry leaf tea... You name it, I tried it, yet my body was silent (although my baby was kicking).  I remember the first night, lying in bed crying thinking I was already a terrible mother because I couldn't even go into Labour properly.  Needless to say I've had this feeling at the back of my mind ever since on and off occupied by what I think is misplaced concern.  I read in my birthing book that often one intervention leads to another and although I know mine were necessary and unavoidable you can't help but think, why me!? I held out as long as my mind and body could take but in the end I was back at Hospital on Friday the 13th, had my waters broken with a metal hook and Prostin inserted to start the inducing process.  This was done because hospitals like to induce labour after 24hours of the waters breaking (if there have been no contractions.)  Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, I had to wait a while longer as the maternity ward at Kings was so full. For us I think it was lucky, it gave us extra time to prepare ourselves for the onset of the baby. (We spent every moment cleaning and enjoying each others company.)

And how naive I was to think that our baby could be born the same day that we went into hospital, we came in at lunch time once we received the call to say that there was now space, were then told to go and get some lunch and then later in the evening I had a membrane sweep and the Prostin inserted.  And even after all that, when the midwife from my antenatal classes dropped by I still thought it could be a Friday 13th baby.

After the Prostin was in, Neil and I tried again to do everything we could to bring on labour, I walked several times around and around the hospital, up and down all the sets of stairs, exhausting myself in the vain hope that I could go into labour naturally.  And although I was having pains that seemed to emulate contractions they would come and go and get more difficult to bare and then become more manageable again.  We eventually gave up at about 3am and tried to get some sleep and then at 7am the next morning after intermittent sleep we were taken to our very own delivery suite where we were informed they were going to put me on the Syntocinon drip.  Yet, by lunchtime, which was 2 examinations later I had dilated by 2cm in what I considered to be 2 days. 2 days and 2 cm I thought, well the baby should be with us in 8 days time at this rate then, it was more than I could bear.  I hated my body, I didn't understand why it was taking so long.  I had spent hours on a drip that was supposed to make my contractions more painful and intense and yet I could barely feel anything.  I was hooked up to a machine the entire time to monitor my heart beat and that of the babies, it also detects contractions (I have no idea how).  However, it was at that second examination on the 12th that the midwife queried whether my waters were still intact, the doctor then inspected and agreed and attempted to break them for a 3rd time! A few minutes later, surrounded in yet more water and a lot more disgusting other fluid it appeared that this was it. Finally the entirety of my waters had gone, and then within a few minutes it hit me.  Hard, heavy and fast contractions came over me in agonising waves, the Syntocinon which had up until this point had little effect on me hit me like a tonne of bricks. I cannot remember what the pain felt like, only that I tried to concentrate on my breathing but I can remember this overwhelming feeling of not knowing what to do with myself but trying as hard as I could to try and concentrate on getting over each contraction as it came with Neil holding my hand and rubbing my back.  Feeling guilty to ask for any pain relief, I eventually succumbed to Gas and Air with the thought in my mind that if this is what it felt like a 4cm could I really get through to 10.

I think by this point I had become more realistic about the progress of my dilation, whereas before I would overestimate I now tried to underestimate, and asked each midwife for a 'worse case scenario' idea of how much I might have moved by.  But at the back of my mind, after being in and out of hospital since the 11th it was beginning to feel like I would be there forever.  Or at least that I would go through all this waiting, all this pain, and still at the end of it I would end up with my worst case scenario, which in my mind was having a Caesarean.  I suppose I can look back on it all now, knowing that this wasn't my fate and that all of the pushing, waiting and pain was worth it because in the end I had my baby naturally.  Even if it did take 3 days in hospital, 3hours of pushing, 2 days on a drip, an epidural, fever, antibiotics, Episiotomy and then Ventouse for the final 3 pushes.

And sitting here, 11 days later it is amazing to think that all of this happened to me, I remember it like a dream or a story I have read, not an experience that I went through.  Because after all that, I have my baby now and he was worth it.

Delicious Toffee Apple Muffins (Perfect for breakfast)

I have invented one of my first ever baking recipes, I normally don't trust myself to alter the wet and dry ingredients for fear of failure.  However I am pleased to report it's not as scary as first thought and these muffins are DELICIOUS!

For the cake mix:

  • 110g butter
  • 110g soft brown sugar
  • 110g self-raising flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 handful of chopped walnuts
  • 1 handful of oats
  • 2 x eggs, beaten
  • light sprinkling of cinnamon

For the apple:

  • 30g butter
  • 30g soft brown sugar
  • 0.5 x lemon, juice only
  • 2 x eating apples 1 x bramley apple, peeled, cored and sliced
  • Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6.
I always make the apple first, I'm not really sure why!

  • Heat the butter in a medium non-stick, oven-proof frying pan, over a medium heat
  • When the butter begins to melt, add the sugar, and allow to begin to caramelise, then add the lemon juice
  • Add the quartered apple wedges to the pan, tossing well, to thoroughly coat them in the caramel, and continue heating through for 4-5 minutes then take off the heat and leave for later.
Putting together the cake mix -
  • Cream together the butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl
  • Add the flour and baking powder, mixing well, as you do
  • Gradually add the beaten eggs and then stir in the walnuts and oats
  • Gently fold in the apple mixture
  • Half fill 12 muffin cases with mixture
  • Top with a sprinkling of brown sugar, cinnamon, oats and chopped walnuts
  • Bake in the oven for around 13minutes.

12 week scan excitement

So here we have our 12 week scans, it did take quite a while but I was so glad I decided to go to Kings.  I've never been there before and found it to be a really nice environment, it seemed to smell of lavender rather than hospital. Lovely!

It was a really wonderful feeling, seeing the baby there, knowing it was safe.  It was like nothing I have ever felt before, a huge amount of importance weighed down on me, like this was one of the most important things in the world to be carrying such a tiny little thing. And it really is tiny, we found out afterwards its just 5.6cm in length.  We also had it confirmed that our risk of the baby having any abnormalities is 1 in thousands and thousands.

As soon as I saw the baby on the screen I got the feeling it was a boy.  I don't really have any tangible reason why other than 'he' was very lazy and wouldn't move for the doctors.  Before I was pregnant I always imagined having a girl but the more I think about it I will be pleased and so excited either way.

We love you baby and we can't wait to meet you!

Bathroom Fast Forward

So, I am pleased and elated to announce that we are really moving forward with our bathroom.

A few weeks ago I ordered some floor samples from Harvey Maria, which I am slightly in love with.  We cannot afford to pay £24 a SqM and even in the sale its still a good £20 and when you have a floor measuring approximately 9 SqM  there aren't many flooring options that are going to come in under £100.  But seriously, I can't even begin to explain the quality of the Harvey Maria stuff, it feels like it would last a life time.  Did I mention they have Cath Kidston designs *drool*

When I ordered the samples I didn't expect to really like them very much, and ordered quite a few of the sale ones just to get an idea of what they were like.  I ordered a few samples in a style I didn't think I would really like, but now I'm totally sold on the look of whitewashed wood and I can't believe how realistic it looks even in a tiny sample.  The pictures just don't do it justice.

I like the fact that the wood style of it would go with pretty much any colour we choose and as I still can't pin myself down to anything it would be great for us.  It had a really realistic texture and a solidness with the durability of being 100% waterproof.

The other fantastic news is that we finally have our long awaited bath! After what feels like hundreds of bids on ebay for roll top baths we are finally there.  It's quite funny actually, I like it when ebay tries to recommend similar items when you don't win the auction, we're trying to buy a roll top bath with taps for no more than £150 and it starts recommending ones that are thousands.  Nice try ebay but I don't think you have the right idea quite yet!

So drum roll please here is our new bath!

I did make the slight error of choosing one without the shower head attachment but I have been assured it has no scratches or chips so its nice and sturdy.  I estimated that hiring a van to collect it from Lydhurst would cost us £40 to hire a van and with petrol (what planet was I on?!)  Just with a quick browse it looked more like £100+ so I did a google of shipping companies and came across Shiply.  As I was getting a bit desparate in terms of my lack of collection options I thought I would list it on there and get some bids for how much someone could deliver it to me for.  I was absolutely astounded, within 20min I already had 2 bids and by the next morning there was a bidding war.  I don't want to jinx it as it's currently set to be delivered on Monday evening, but do far its's been amazing.  It's actually cheaper to get someone else spending the time doing all the hard work. So the delivery is now costing just shy of £40 with the Shiply admin fee included. How exciting!

We've also gone full steam ahead and bought a set of towels off Ebay as well, don't worry they're not second hand.  I was looking forward to rolling around in then and choosing some from my favourite stores (TXMaxx, or John Lewis, both have a sale on at the moment.)  However, Ebay came up trumps again. 2 hand towels 2 bath sheets and 2 bath towels with delivery for £31!  They look gorgeous as well, really plump and cosy.  They were originally from Next which I wouldn't have thought of for towels but I'm not complaining!

Oh and we are pretty blissed out from our 12 week scan today, but I'll tell you about that some other time :)
